Original set foils behave a lot like Reserved List cards in this way

Hazezon Tamar still pretty much stands up to modern design principles, although it would likely make the tokens right away now

Each Innistrad set after the original has had some new ones, and the Magic Origins flip walkers were another great example

Its not completely out of the question, but it takes a lot for this type of trick to be good, and this one is barely a mana undercosted for having to really set it up
